Celebrating the third edition of the international conference on plastic pollution, MICRO 2020

ImatgeUnder the patronage of UNESCO, the third edition of the international conference on plastic pollution from macroplastics to nanoplastics: MICRO 2020': Knowledge and responsibilities, will be held from the 23–27 of November, 2020. As in previous years, the island of Lanzarote will host this event, however this year’s conference will be predominantly online.

MICRO 2020 brings together the work of more than 2000 authors in the form of over 500 presentations, thanks to the close collaboration between the Marine Sciences For Society research network and the Biosphere Reserves of Lanzarote and Menorca, connecting the conference with the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves and the patronage of UNESCO.

This year’s conference is an opportunity to continue sharing efforts, through an open science format, to identify responsibilities and meaningful actions to address plastic pollution.

For Lanzarote and the MICRO 2020 participants, the online edition of the conference poses new challenges but also opportunities. For example, it will greatly reduce CO 2 emissions related to participants’ travel to the island in person. This year over 1000 participants will directly connect with the conference while staying in place in their respective nodes around the world: Banyuls, Bastia, Bayreuth, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Guyancourt, Heligoland, Ithaca, Lanzarote, Le Mans, Leipzig, Madrid, Mallorca, Marne la Vallée, Mazatlán, Menorca, Nantes, Ostend, Plouzané, Plymouth, Seoul, Siena, Toronto, Trondheim, Utrecht, Vienna, Vigo, Wageningen...etc.

The inaugural act will take place Monday, 23 November, with participation of representatives from UNESCO, the Island Cabildo of Lanzarote, the Island Consell of Menorca, the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves, and representatives from the MICRO 2020
Scientific Committee.
