Located on the southern, southeastern and northeastern coasts of Brazil, the biosphere reserve covers 47% of the Atlantic Forest Biome and includes areas of 17 different states. The Atlantic Forest is made up of a wide variety of forest formations with their associated ecosystems, including mangroves, dunes and vegetation of mountainous sectors. It runs along approximately 5,000 km of Brazilian coastline and ranges in altitude from sea level to 2,500 m above sea level, in addition to its marine areas.
