Located in the Gulf of Guinea, the biosphere reserve includes the entire surface of the island of Principe and several islets, together with an extensive marine area. It houses a rich biodiversity, with many endemic species among vascular plants, molluscs, insects, birds, reptiles and bats. It contains a wide range of communities and habitats of international importance as tropical primary forests. The area has is of great importance for the reproduction of sea turtles, seabirds and cetaceans, as well as for the conservation of coral reefs.
