The biosphere reserve is made up of an area in the north of the Island of Madeira (Municipal Area of Santana) and an adjacent marine area, in the Atlantic Ocean, 796 km from the coast of Africa. This zone shows a series of heterogeneous bioclimatic features that favor substantial diversity in broad-leafed vegetation and unique native habitats, like coastal habitats with endemic vegetation Canary Island Mediterranean laurel forest, temperate Madeira laurel forest and high altitude heathlands.
