The Yakushima and Kuchinoerabu Jima Biosphere Reserve comprises all islands of Yakushima and Kuchinoerabu Jima, and marine areas up to 2 km off shore in Yakushima and 1 km off shore in Kuchinoerabu Jima, south of Japan. It is located on the northern border of the biogeographical boundary of subtropical and tropical wild life and the southern boundary of Holarctic wildlife boundary. Houses subtropical and temperate forests, Yaku-cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) conifer forests, some of which are around 1000 years old, with dwarf bamboo and grasslands around the mountaintops.
